What I have lived for?

“这样的图片总是沉重的,触及灵魂的。我的灵魂由于人类的苦难而受伤。”图片总是带着那样的现场性即时性。“以思想者自居摄影师仿佛在说,苦难发生,当时,我在场。”安逸中的你还能够说:out of sight,out of mind么?每天,在这个世界的某个角落,天灾、人祸、战争、瘟疫、死亡,依旧在演绎人类难以逃脱的宿命。在这样的苦痛面前,任何的喜乐都是肤浅的、罪恶的。

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be! Long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

What I have lived for

----Bertrand Russell

"Blockade" Dude, I totally have my Christmas cards" screams a man after having his photograph made in front of a police blockage in downtown Portland during a visit by President Bush. Protesting is very hip in Portland.

HENNA HAND

"Henna Hand" - In the markets of Morocco, among the spices are baskets of dried green leaves and lime - green powder is also henna, plant of paradise and love according to Moroccans. The sight of hands covered up to the wrists and feet covered to the ankle is as common as nail polish or makeup in other countries. This woman, selling candles outside the tomb of Moulay Idriss II in Fez, says the design is to show love for her husband.

FALLEN FIRE FIGHTER

"Fallen Fire Fighter" Firefighters mourned one of their own who was killed when he had a heart attack during a house fire.

Afghanistan Brick Factory

"Afghanistan Brick Factory" Ziaadin is one of several men, many of them relatives, who work in the brick factories outside of Kabul, Afghanistan. Because of the bad economy in the war-torn country, many of the brick factories sat idle for several months.

In the distance lighting struck in Oregon

In the distance lighting struck in Oregon this past summer. It stuck all over the state and caused fire to scorch thousands of acres in the rural areas. The massive land loss made it the worst burning season Oregonians ever had.

Annette Steele has cleaned other peoples

Annette Steele has cleaned other people's homes for over 45 years. This work has kept food on the table and put children through school. At the age of 69, this tiny woman from Northeast Portland still gets down on her hands and knees to scrub floors. She says "I could have had easier jobs, but I chose this work. I chose it because I needed to."

MASON

MASON - Abdul Qadir is repairing his war torn home in south Kabul with a mixture of mud, straw and water. His work as a mason has been so steady that he's working on his home on Friday, the traditional Muslim holiday.

DESOLATE STREET

"Desolate Street" - On a stormy fall evening at the intersection of 22nd St. S. and 9th Ave. the sky is as foreboding as the business prospects along the historic street. The SouthCity Grocery and Meat Market (at left) is one of the few places open after dark. Most of the old time shops, like Harden's Grocery (the building on the right side of the road) which closed about 1990, have had locks on their doors for years.

Annie Maes is black

Pastor Karen Dudley used a crutch as a microphone stand during an evening church service in a vacant lot in South Dallas. The International Street Ministry sponsored an outdoor service for people in the neighborhood near Harwood and Grand.

Handprints of children

Handprints of children etched in dirt and grime mark the walls at the former Soviet Union Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Several thousand refugees are living an impoverished existence in the former embassy, often with two or three family's living in one room together with no heat, no water, and no bathrooms.

A woman huddled

A woman huddled under blankets to keep out the bitter winter cold at the homeless shelter, Marastoon, in Kabul Afghanistan.

Peacekeeping troops

Peacekeeping troops struggled to keep eager Afghan fans at bay as a crowd of thousands tried to get into the sold-out "Game of Unity" soccer match between the British team and Kabul United. The crowd pushed, shoved, and climbed their way into the walled compound to the area where troops were searching people before they entered Ghazi Stadium. Many were crushed in the mob of thousands that crowded around the walls. Peacekeepers eventually fired warning shots, tear gas, and used dogs to get the unruly crowd under control and back out of the area.
